We scouted out Crittenden Marsh today in preparation for Fall Term's first trip and had a good showing of birds. Burrowing Owls seem to be dependable near the kite flying area of Shoreline Park which should be a real thrill for new members of the class. As well there was an adult female Northern Harrier hunting in the area around the burrows. At the marsh proper we easily found Ruddy Duck, Lesser Scaup, Green-winged and Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, Semipalmated Plover, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Least and Western Sandpiper as well as four species of Gulls, Forster's Tern three species of Herons and untold numbers of Barn and Cliff Swallows.

This weekend, my company had a retreat at Huntington Lake in the Southern Sierras. The company's owner invited us to her cabin on the lake for dinner and festivities, including hiking, canoeing, sailing and horseback riding. After gathering at her lovely home and enjoying all manner of fun, we all retired to our individual cabins at Cedar Crest Resort which I highly recommend if anyone is looking for a quiet getaway. Kelly and I spend our time mostly being lazy and hiking short distances for some much needed down time. The area around the lake is stuningly beautiful and produced many good birds for us.
